CORDESMAN Anthony H

Iran's military forces in transition: conventional threats and weapons of mass destruction - Westport, Conn.: Praeger, 1999 - 432p.

Describes Iran's military capabilities and analyses it's progress in military redevelopment. Notes that internal tensions between mainstream moderates and the conservative minority (who nevertheless wield considerable power) have resulted in an ambiguous military posture which could either produce a ligitimate defence capability or a more aggressive competence. Concludes that interested foreign powers should be realistic about Iran's potential as a regional power and that it's future defence strategy depends as much on economics as on internal power struggles.
