Myanmar's military coup and the elevation of the minority agenda?/ Ardeth Maung Thawnghmung - 2021

The military overthrow of Myanmar's elected government in February 2021 has again thrown into upheaval the troublesome relationship between civilian politicians and armed forces that has plagued the country since its first military coup in 1962. It has also brought back into view the relationship between Myanmar's Bamar majority and the country's ethnic minorities. The coup has served as a rallying point for communities from diverse backgrounds and across different generations, including those who had been unimpressed by or hostile towards Suu Kyi and her party. Protestors are unified in their condemnation of the coup and in their call for the release of detainees, including Aung San Suu Kyi and other prominent NLD leaders.
