Prominent Papuan activist's arrest indicates Indonesia's broader suppression of pro-independence groups, increases likelihood of recurring violent protests/ IHS Markit - 2021

Police in Papua province on 9 May 2021 arrested Victor Yeimo, a leading member of the pro-independence organisation, the West Papua National Committee (Komite Nasional Papua Barat: KNPB), for allegedly "masterminding" large-scale violent anti-government protests in Jayapura, the provincial capital, in August 2019. The protests across Papua were carried out in response to reported racist remarks made against Papuan students in Surabaya.
