It stands at the centre of many of the Asia-Pacific region's main economic, political and security mechanisms.  It has assumed greater leadership in key processes such as the CPTPP, and cultivated key relationships beyond its alliance with the US, including with ASEAN, Australia, India, and partners in Europe and NATO. Under Abe's leadership, Japan has re-emerged as a primary actor in international affairs.
