The Al Qaeda-Islamic State rivalry: competition yes, but no competitive escalation/ Tore Refslund Hamming - 2020

This paper argues, is to be found in a pre-conflict methodological re-orientation within Al Qaeda and in the pacifying role played by influential Al Qaeda-affiliated ideologues. The article will be presented including an explanation of the sources. Second, a detailed study of the intra- and later inter-movement contestation between Al Qaeda and the Islamic State will follow and explain the emergence of the competitive environment, how the groups reacted, unexpected development into perspective and offer an assessment of the broader cohesion within the Jihadi field.
