Asia's insecurity - 2003

Calls for governments to be more realistic about security in the Asia Pacific region and to prepare for alternative strategic futures. Argues that steady progress on economic and strategic issues cannot be assumed and that straight-line growth projections are simplistic and may be misleading. Considers the effect of the continuing economic crisis on security issues in China, Japan, South Korea, Thailand and Indonesia, then looks at potential trouble spots. Identifies uncertainties in American policies and the ineffectiveness of Asia's multilateral institutions - ASEAN and APEC as causes of concern and finally lists three areas of strategic uncertainity.
