The Islamic State has had a bad year, having lost almost all of its territory in Iraq and Syria by November. However, despite the collapse of their self-declared 'caliphate', the Sunni extremists will continue their campaign of violence by returning to insurgent and terrorist tactics, feeding on anti-Shia sentiment and opposition to Syria's President Bashar al-Assad.
