The book is arranged by themes rather than chronologically and aims to explain why the military adapted positively to some democratic demands but not to others. Five areas are considered: regime maintenance; doctrinal adaptation; internal security policy; the development of military ideology; and the civil-military discourse both in the final years of Soeharto's rule and after.
