<br/><br/> This paper contributes to the literature by examining how politician in Japan are discussing the notion of smart power.  This paper has shown how JSDF missions operated on similar premises, recalling Nyes observation that 'soft power' that arises from benignity, competency, legitimacy and trust can add leverage to the hard power of military force.
