South Korea and Japan: Rivals in naval expansion/ Claire Apthorp - 2015

As China and North Korea continue to build up their military strength, Japan and South Korea are enhancing their self-defence capabilities in the interests of defending their terrirtories against threats, and to maintain an acceptable power balance in the region. For both Japan and South Korea, this has seen an increased focus on the development of layered defences, with well-equipped surface vessels forming an outer ring capable of providing anti-air warfare (AAW), anti-surface warfare (ASuW), and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) as well as defending critical Sea Lines of Communication.
