N2  - Counting Malaysia's claimed EEZ, the total area that the Royal Malaysian Navy has to operationally cover is 574,000 sq km, complicated by the fact that the country is split into two halves, namely Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia. They are roughly 1200km apart. Adding to the RMN's burden, Peninsular Malaysia is next to the vital Straits of Malacca while East Malaysia not only contains Malaysia's claims on the disputed Spratly Islands but since the incursion of Sulu militants into the Malaysian state of Sabah in 2013, also requires a constant naval presence to prevent further incursions from occurring
