The current outbreak of ebola in West Africa has been widely covered in the global media, as the latest example of a health epidemic that can quickly spread across and beyond countries. While drugs development is needed to counter the virus, it is argued that any succesful long-term approach to fighting epidemics must be based on a deeper socio-cultural understanding of the dynamics that underpin fragile healthcare systems.
