The rise of the humanitarian drone : giving content to an emerging concept / Kristin Bergtora Sandvik and Kjersti Lohne. - 2014

Drones, typically developed for military battlefield applications, are beginning to be used in humanitarian aid and disaster relief operations. This article looks at some actual and potential examples, discusses the implications of this technology migration, and considers the political and public dimensions. Objectivity is required about humanitarian drones, as is recognition that they are associated with military rationales and practices. Identifies problems which will continue to exist: reliability, safety, targetting logic, ethics, and that these machines are not aid workers - they have no empathy.
