This article is divided into four parts. A discussion of the mutual neglect between the power shift debate and the literature on the concept of power. The second part an overview of a conception of power alternative to the state centric quantitative and zero-sum understanding of power. The third section illustrates the contingency and socially constructed nature of Chinese economic power and what it means for US-China power shift. The final part suggests further interrogating conventional ways of thinking about power.
