Visualizing the influence of geography, oil and geopolitics on civil wars in the Arab world : a novel application of self-organizing maps and duration models / Mohamed M Mostafa and Mohaned Talib Al-Hamdi. - 2014

This article reports a study which used artificial intelligence neural network techniques and data for Arab civil wars 1948-2003 to consider why some internal conflicts ended within a few months while others dragged on for many years. Factors identified included distance from the capital, terrain, natural resources, access to international borders, and rebel fighting capability, with access to oil being the least significant factor in the period studied.
