<br/><br/> Chile has long experience of earthquakes and generally is well prepared to cope with them. However the 8.8 magnitude quake that occurred in Chile on 27 February 2010 produced post-seismic tsunamis yet no tsunami warnings were given at any level - national, regional, or local. This article considers why the Chilean emergency management system failed to provide warnings. A chronology of events on 27 February highlights why speed of response is critical.
