Same bed, different dreams : China's "peaceful rise" and Sino-Russian rivalry in Central Asia / Younkyoo Kim and Stephen Blank. - 2013

Russia has for a long time been the dominant power in Central Asia. However China's economic interests in the region are eroding some of Russia's influence, a trend that may increase when China's interests extend to defence and security. This article analyses differences between Russian and Chinese strategy over the period 2009-2012. The article suggests the advantage now lies with China, and considers the impact of a more assertive China on the countries of Central Asia.
