This paper examines the impact of Air Base Operability, its requirements and how well the Australian Defence Force is addressing it in terms of protection and attack. This paper examines a brief history of ABO, air base characteristics, likely threats, the active and passive defence of bases, and alternatives. It evaluates how the RAAF is addressing the major issues, focusing on bases in the north as well as some limitied discussion on remote sensor sites supporting air power. The principles developed can be applied to most cases to the planning and conduct of air base attacks.
