This article seeks to rationalize the expeditionary role of the third generation SAF across the entire force spectrum from the defence "raison d'etre" inherited from its first generation. The article posits that Singapore's pragmatic approach to expeditionary operations is dictated by structural geostratagic vulnerabilities, reinforced by institutionalized historical memories of an under-siege past. The final analysis the structural vulnerabilities imposed on singapore's by geography which are further amplified by deeply rooted historical memories continue to be strategic realities that cannot be ignored by Singaporian policy makers.
