The evolution of British colonial policy through the nineteenth century, stressing the gradual withdrawal of British troops from the self-governing colonies and the closely associated evolvement of the concept imperial defence. The conviction that much of interest remains to be said about those small campaigns and expeditions from which the British Empire was seldom free during Victoria's long reign. The history of British army, the range of sources consulted was often narrow imperialists assumptions imposed their own limitations.
