The great difference in scale between the US and UK armed forces invalidates any comparisons between the two defence departments.  The comparative studies of defence organisations can fulfill a number of useful purposes.  To study another's organisation can help one to understand one's own better by learning which aspects of it are unique and shared with similar organisations elsewhere.
