N2  - Newly democratised countries have to deal with the serious possibility of authoritarian military regimes reasserting their influence. This article identifies two possible approaches (increase military spending to keep the armed forces quiet, or decrease military spending to reduce military influence and use resources for other programme such as social welfare). Data from a study of democratic transitions between 1967 and 1999 supports a corellation between decreasing military spending and decreasing risk of democratic transition failure
