<br/><br/> Palm oil plantations are accused of devastating large areas of rain forest in southeast Asia (30,000 km sq of plantations in Indonesia alone by year 2000). Pressure groups and increasingly governments are applying pressure on commercial users of palm oil to switch to alternatives that are less environmentally damaging. This article provides an overview of the present position.
