The purpose of this book is to propose strategies to assess, identify, and reduce the risk of hostage-taking, prepare a crisis management team, negotiate with hostage takers, cooperate with the media, identify the different types of hostage takers and identify the major legal issues related to hostage taking. This book also presented briefly outlines the historical antecedents of hostage taking typologies, examines the critical individual perspectives associated with hostage-taking episodes, provides an overview of police guidelines for resolving hostage situations and attempts to evaluate the future of hostage taking by criminals, psychotics and political terrorists.
