He then later came to command the 82nd Airborne Division in World War II, leading his men in various missions in Sicily, Italy, Normandy (D-Day invasion), Holland and The Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he became strategic planner to the Pentagon, President Kennedy's adviser and was also US ambassador to France.
