Study of the effect of China's growing international trade on its national defence policy. As a continental power China is concerned to protect its extensive land borders and claimed sea areas but increasing overseas interests will add requirement for long range power projection capabilities. However these capabilites will have to be supported by other non-military solutions. The article mentions as an example the difficulty China would face if India were to exercise a sustained denial of access in the Indian Ocean.
