The growing importance of counterinsurgency has led the U.S. military to become involved in aspects of civil governance that outside its traditional experience. This article looks briefly at the history of civil military relations and then at the changes that have arisen as a result of operations in Afghanistan with the growth of high level interactions between military and civil agencies and the military involvement in civil governance.
