Mapping national anxieties : Thailand's southern conflict/ Duncan McCargo - 2009

The article argues that the current insurgency marks a watershed moment : the time to act is now. Others argue that the militant movement is extremely decentralised based on a cell-like, village level structure and lacks an explicit central command and control. The southern insurgency is at core a challenge to the legitimacy of the Thai state and a pre-emptive strike that could culminate in a radical reorganisation power. Thailand's southern violence is the microcosm of a potentially wide ranging civil conflict in the country.
