Individual risk factors associated with premature discharge from military service / Helena Larsson, Lisbet Broman, Karin Harms-Ringdahl. - 2009

Premature discharge from military service is a world wide problem with costs for both individuals and armed forces. This article reports a study of the Swedish military where failure to complete training averages 13% with some units reporting almost a third of conscripts discharged early. Pre-existing musculoskeletal injuries, sedentary lifestyle, smoking, or poor mental health were all found to be factors. Recommends better pre-enlistment screening and/or preventive strategies for physical and psychological interventions.
