Data suggests the Japanese economy is already recession. Given the global downturn and an appreciating yen , exports will slow and the real economy faces a steep slowdown while the misery index is primed to rise. For Japan the great concern is how to keep US engaged in Asia and respond to Washington's expectations that it will play a more prominent role in the expanding conflict and nation-building initiatives in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
