The ice of the Arctic Ocean is receding quickly. Effects of this include the opening of shorter sea transport routes between east Asia and Europe and increased competition for oil, gas and mineral deposits. Several countries including Russia, the USA, Canada, Norway and Denmark are pursuing claims to large parts of the ocean territory. This article considers the political and military security implications of a more accessible Arctic.
