N2  - For many years Taiwan's requests to the United States to purchase defence equipment produced little of substance. Then in 2001 the George W Bush administration approved an arms package 'so large that it overwhelmed Taiwan's defence establishment'. This article considers how Taiwan responded to the approval and also looks at American efforts to persuade Taiwan to accept the package. Concludes with recommendations for future American policy towards Taiwan
