War in Georgia, jitters all around / Svante E Cornell - 2008

On 8th August 2008 Russian forces attacked Georgia quickly taking control of South Ossetia. This article considers the recent political history of Georgia and the reasons for Russian antipathy towards one of its former constituents in the South Caucasus. Speculates that the next American administration is likely to take a much tougher line on Russia, and that Russia has probably misjudged the extent of world opinion and has started a process of consolidation among fomer Soviet states that it did not want to occur.
