This article calls for caution with respect to the stated causal relation between institutionalization and democratic consolidation and it questions some aspects of the concept. In the Philippines, the political situation is a volatile as ever. In Thailand the military coup against Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. In Indonesia is an exception in that patterns of competition are relatively regular and a few of large parties are to a certain extent still rooted in society.
