China's search for military power /

Based on analysis of recent Chinese military and defence publications this article argues that China's objectives in achieving military power are reasonably clear and consistent. They are essentially defensive, based on continental defence, the reunification of Taiwan, and growing maritime interests, with limited force projection capabilities. However it is noted that changing force structures, particularly in the navy, to achieve these objectives may themselves produce new security concerns, possibly undermining China's current soft power efforts aimed at regional reassurance.
