Summary: Good explanation and critical analysis of the role of intelligence services in the post 9-11 world. As the authors make clear in the introduction the focus of the book is almost exclusively on the UK and the USA although their original intention had been a much wider study. Deals with what is meant by intelligence, who undertakes intelligence work, what that work involves and what is done with the results. Then considers the many and varied reasons for intelligence failures, whether and how intelligence can be controlled in democratic societies, and finally how intelligence can contribute to making the world safer.
