This book is a detailed account of the planning for the coup in Indonesia that took place on 30 September 1965. It establishes the central role of the PKI (Indonesian Communist Party) in the planning and the complete surprise with which it was carried out; despite prior warning the Army appears to have been seriously unprepared, and as a result lost six generals in one night. The coup was the prelude to large scale unrest in Indonesia in which possibly a quarter of a million people died.
