Faced with the serious possibility of being absorbed by either the Brooke controlled Sarawak or the North Borneo Company (modern day Sabah), in 1906 Brunei chose instead to accept British protection. This book explains the diplomatic and political moves that made the protectorate system possible and made it work to the benefit of Brunei. Two people were essential to the success of the strategy: Sultan Hashim Jalilul Alam and M S H McArthur chief British administrator in Brunei.
