Opens with a first hand account of a close-quarters fight during the Iraq War of 2003 in which US Marines were surprised in an ambush at Al Kut, an engagement that the Marines won. Col McCoy uses the rest of the book to identify how this was made possible. He concentrates on the importance of leadership, teamwork, and training, and entwined in all of these is the role of the commander in developing the mental and physical attributes of his Marines.
