Russia has been an important source of arms for Iran and is also building a nuclear reactor at Bushehr. Iran is Russia's strongest ally in the Middle East but the relationship has drawbacks - first because it is causing Russia U.S. relations to sour, and second because hardline Islamists in Iran might challenge Russia over its policy and actions in Chechnya.
