Discussion based on the case of the Royal Australian Navy of the need for long-term thinking about the strategic benefits of maintaining an indigenous defence industrial capability. The article is unequivocal on the importance of such a capability and notes that within twenty years Australia's strategic framework will have changed dramatically with China and India impinging on its sphere of influence and the USA perhaps less able to guarantee Australian survival.
