Recent American public opinion polls suggest that Americans have an increasingly negative view of Islam. Notes that although this conservatism is not new (in the 19th century Catholic Christian immigrants were also viewed with suspicion) there is also a difference in that Islamic values are considered alien to core US values. Some attempts have been made to improve American public understanding and the article notes that in reality the USA has managed to assimilate 5 million Muslim immigrants rather better than has been the case in many European countries.
