The system is two dimensional and provides regional coverage; it became fully operational in early 2004. This paper briefly describes the constellation and the mathematical model of the Beidou system. Accuracy tests were done and results compared with GPS data. This paper notes that a new three-dimensional system called COMPASS is currently at the research stage.
