Draws on the recent histories of Argentina, Peru and Italy to identify the political-strategic challenges of modern unconventional conflict. Stresses the political complexity of insurgency and the broader implications of global freedoms supported by the civil military forces that have to deal with global and regional instability. The case studies were selected because they address counterinsurgency as much as they do insurgency. Argues that unless these hard political lessons are learned higher levels of instability and state failure can be expected in the future.
