Summary: It has been sugested that in the twentieth century four times as many people died at the hands of their own governments as in the wars and conflicts of the same period, and the early 21st century shows little change. This book argues that militaries can and should be used to defend people against human rights abuses, tyranny, and genocide. After considering the broad context the book looks at present multinational military or defence groupings - including the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) - and concludes with several national case studies featuring the USA, Canada, Australia, UK, New Zealand, and Japan.
