In Qinghai, China, Tibetan villagers are increasingly engaging in labor migration to cities, driven by the desire to build new, high-quality houses, which have become a significant marker of family status and prestige. This shift from "side-work" (off-farm work) to being the primary source of income is fueled by state-led housing subsidy projects and the social pressure to acquire these modern homes.
