As drones become more ubiquitous on and off the battlefield, the emerging field of drone forensics is increasingly important to global security. Drone forensics entails investigating, collecting and preserving critical information regarding a drone, its operation and how it was used, through scientific methodologies, for use in law enforcement, national security or other investigations. It may involve recovering flight parameters around where, when and at what altitude the drone flew; tracing the origins of drone components; or recovering fingerprints. Drone forensics can help: defenders build better drone countermeasures; law enforcement agencies detect and deter crimes; states establish and enforce sanctions; militaries adopt pre-emptive and preventative strategies; and the global community enforce autonomous weapons laws and norms.
