Rethinking national security: is it singular or multidimensional, and where does human well-being fit? / Chinglen Laishram and Homen Thangjam

By: Contributor(s): Material type: TextTextPublication details: 2024Subject(s): Online resources: In: Strategic Analysis, Volume 48, Number 4, July-August 2024, pages: 326-345Summary: Realist approaches to national security have limitations as they focus mainly on protecting a State’s territorial integrity and against external and internal threats. Chandra and Bhonsle proposed a comprehensive national security framework considering six key domains. However, it remains unclear whether national security has ‘one’ or ‘many’ dimensions and whether human well-being is a component or an outcome of national security. This study found that using a three-dimensional index for national security improved cumulative data variance by 33 per cent, and treating human well-being as an outcome of national security resulted in a 30 per cent improvement in its predictive capacity.
