History of relations between India and Sri Lanka with particular reference to the Tamil separatist movement. India first provided covert support to the separatists, then attempted to act as mediator, and by the late 1980s was openly fighting against the separatists in Sri Lanka as the IPKF (Indian Peace Keeping Force).
