Presents four case studies of pre Cold-War guerilla activity: the American guerrillas in the Carolinas during the American Revolution; the revolt in the Vendee, France in the 1790s; the French occupation of Spain from 1808; and the American Civil War. The author states the purposes of the book as a) to examine pre Cold War guerrilla struggles for insights for present day U.S. policy makers, and b) to evaluate the proposition that guerilla conflicts during the Cold War were different to such a degree that they are of little value for future policy guidance.
